Religious Diversity Journeys Visits St. John Armenian Church

April 28, 2024

On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, students participating in the Religious Diversity Journeys program had the opportunity to visit St. John Armenian Church in Southfield, MI. The faith leaders, coordinators and volunteers helped to create a welcoming and supportive environment that allowed the children to think critically and approach the day with curiosity.

The students were awe-struck by the beauty of the architecture within the worship space and the stories behind the mosaic tile artwork, stained glass windows and other holy relics. The history and significance of the Armenian church history was shared with the students by church faith leader, Father Aren. He shared fascinating stories and gave the students a tour of the holy space. Students were also led on an insightful tour of the Alex and Marie Manoogian Museum by knowledgeable educators which featured art and relics that reconstructed the history of the Armenian people through the ages.

The students were treated to a special lunch which included an Armenian sweet bread called, Chorek, served with jelly. Church partner, Motor City Mitten Michigan, a homeless outreach non-profit out of St.Clair Shores, spoke to the students about their mission and acts of service. The students were then able to participate in packing lunches for the homeless that were to be distributed later that same day. The students were able to understand the immediate impact their actions would have on community members in need.

The students will certainly carry the memories of this extraordinary Journey back into their school and communities to inspire and enrich the lives of others. We are so grateful to the wonderful people of St. John Armenian for welcoming us so warmly and we look forward to returning again soon!
