CHRISTIANITY

About Christianity

The word “Christian” means “follower of Christ” and has been in use since sometime during the first one hundred years of the Common Era(CE).

Jesus, the central figure of the Christian religion, was born in the city of Nazareth around the year 2 Before the Common Era(BCE), and lived until about the year 30CE. Christians regard Jesus as the prophesied Messiah (In Greek: Christ) of the Biblical book Christians call the Old Testament and commonly refer to him as Jesus Christ.

After Jesus’ death, his followers, convinced he had been resurrected, and the community they formed of people who believed similarly eventually became the Christian Church. Today, thousands of years after Christianity was first established, there are over 33,000 denominations, or branches, of Christianity. This makes it very difficult to make generalizations such as “All Christians believe…”

There are many thousands of churches serving Christian families in the Metro Detroit area. Our Christianity Resources provides a glimpse of a small selection of local Christian communities that enhance our region with a variety of different faith perspectives and cultural practices. Each and every one 100% Christian.
