Maternal and Infant Health Advancement

September 17, 2024

As we wrap up the summer, the InterFaith Leadership Council would like to take the time to reflect on the great work that we’ve done as we continue to share our presentation, Maternal Infant Health Advancement: “Bridging the Gaps Where We Belong.” We would like to extend a special thanks to Russell Street Missionary Baptist Church on August 4th, the historic Little Rock Baptist Church for allowing us to present at the Considine Recreation Center on August 17th, New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church on August 18th, and the Muslim Center Mosque and Community Center on August 21st.

On August 25th, the historic Second Baptist Church of Detroit welcomed us to present and engage with their congregation. The seniors of Second Baptist were excited to learn more about the depths of preventative care, preconception health, and were eager to pass the education on to their families. We feel certain the impact of this will last a lifetime and make a priceless impression.

During our visit to Muslim Center Mosque and Community Center, we had the opportunity to dive deeper into an educational session learning more about lactation and the benefits it has to offer babies and mothers. We also highlighted financial savings that can help minimize financial burdens for families.

On August 25th -31st we also recognized National Black Breastfeeding Week.

Each faith community welcomed us with open arms! They were able to connect us to a great group of pregnant women, fathers, and members of their local communities who enjoyed the chance to learn valuable information about maternal and infant health as well as available resources. All of these events gave us a great start!

If you would like to interact with the InterFaith Leadership Council and learn more about this informative presentation, don’t worry, you still have time! Our last presentation will be Wednesday, September 18th at 1:00 pm at the Islamic Organization of North America (IONA) Youth Center, 28694 Ryan Rd. Warren, MI 48092. Additionally, our resource library is full of educational material and referral organizations that you or someone you know may need. We look forward to seeing you there!

As part of our initiative, Maternal Infant Health Advancement, “Bridging the Gaps Where We Belong”, a program that is made possible with grant funding from Southeast Michigan Perinatal Quality Improvement Coalition, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and United Way for Southeastern Michigan; We believe that Detroit and the surrounding communities can greatly benefit from this initiative, empowering individuals with knowledge and tools to take proactive steps towards their health and well-being.

Access to reliable health information and resources remains a significant barrier in many communities, particularly in the realms of maternal health and chronic conditions like hypertension, which disproportionately affect BIPOC communities and underserved populations.

The Prenatal and Postnatal Care Resource Library is live now, and was created to equip expectant mothers and community health advocates with crucial information to ensure healthier pregnancy outcomes.

Whether preparing for a baby’s arrival or adjusting to early parenthood, this library aims to enlighten, empower and support anyone with knowledge towards a healthier birth.
