Are Our Children Sacred to Us Today?

September 17, 2024

Children are not our future… or so it may seem if an alien looked at what we do rather than what we say so often that we might even believe it. The Health and Human Services Administration estimates that 14.5 million children live in poverty in the U.S. Twice that number live in families with incomes less than $40,000. How on earth does a family of four live on that amount in our society today? Another shocking statistic: Guns are a leading cause of accidental deaths of children and have overtaken motor vehicle deaths. Would a compassionate society that values children – that believes children are our future – allow this? If we considered children sacred wouldn’t we demonstrate that by nourishing them and protecting all children not just those who live in wealthy plentifully resourced communities. Children and their mothers who live in poverty are malnourished in so many ways no matter how much love their mothers shower on them.

It takes community resources, incredible schools, great parks, recreational opportunities, clean air and of course, nutritious food, to feed the bodies and minds of children. Join psychiatrist Saba Maroof, an observant Muslim with young children of her own, and Bob Bruttell as they discuss, “Are Our Children Sacred to Us Today?”
