A Journey of Discovery: Eastern Odyssey Tour Brings Buddhist and Hindu Traditions to Life
October 21, 2024
On Friday, September 27th, the Education Committee welcomed 18 travelers on our Eastern Odyssey bus tour experience. Our group journeyed to the Midwest Buddhist Meditation Center in Warren and to the Bharatiya Hindu Temple in Troy. The group boarded the bus and enjoyed introductory remarks about each site by Dr. Paula Drewek. These remarks set the stage for the rest of our visit, as we learned basic terminology and practices of Buddhism and Hinduism.
Our guides and hosts at both locations were warm and welcoming, and provided an overview of their worship spaces and practices. Participants enjoyed learning through tours at each location, a talk about basic tenets and spiritual practices, and an experiential component. At the Buddhist Meditation center, this included a guided mindfulness meditation. At the Bharatiya Temple, our group was able to hear and join in a Hindu chant and learn how the chants pay tribute to the Deities. Opportunities for questions and answers allowed group members to gain further insights into specific aspects of these faith traditions and gain deeper understanding.
Feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive. Participants commented on the learning opportunity afforded by participating in this event. One participant stated, “I learned what I don’t know – and need to pursue!” In fact, for many on our tour, the traditions associated with Buddhism and Hinduism were unfamiliar; Another commenter noted, “Today I learned about the fascinating philosophical underpinnings of Hinduism” while another remarked that they had learned “about the dynamics of Hindu Prayer/Devotion as well as Buddhist meditation.” A final comment summed up the day’s experience this way: “This group makes you a better person by just attending and learning from one another.”
Another highlight of the day was a delicious Indian lunch at Kashmiri Kitchen in Sterling Heights. Here, our group was the focus of excellent service as we enjoyed fellowship and four delicious entree options.
The Eastern Odyssey bus tour offered participants a rich, immersive experience, fostering both intellectual and spiritual growth. Travelers were able to gain a deeper appreciation for the faith traditions through direct interaction, meaningful conversations, and shared experiences. The warmth of the hosts, the opportunity to engage with diverse spiritual practices, and the fellowship over lunch all contributed to a memorable and enriching day, leaving participants eager for future opportunities to explore and connect across differences.
