Is AI the Fulcrum of Our Future?

January 20, 2025

A word that should be in contention for the word of the year is AI. The gurus of our age have filled the blogosphere with many messages, claiming that AI will be the fulcrum of our future. The future, they say, will be leveraged by advances in forms of digital intelligence.

The Faith and Works podcast featured an episode in early 2024 with professors Saeed Khan, Chris Gilliard, and David Koukal. In this timely discussion, we focused our lens on the prospects and ethics of this both promising and foreboding technology. Our thought leaders warned that the hype for this technology may simply be serving the profit motives of the prominent techno-barkers and not live up to the excitement being ginned up. They questioned a medium that serves up “hallucinations.“ They invited us to consider that the hoovering-up of the intellectual product of thoughtful scholars and presenting it be used without attribution by possibly less thoughtful others is a core ethical concern. AI is a medium that requires algorithms. Algorithms are the product of technicians acting as large scale editors. Our podcast suggested that the ethics of the editor and what and how information is presented as truth is an age old ethical problem. It is right for us to question the ethics of AI and to note that AI will require intense, dedicated ethical supervision.

Looking ahead to 2025, Faith and Works is excited to expand its reach and engagement through new discussions that continue the thought-provoking content highlighted in our AI episode. These include “Ethics and Empathy, the Religiously Unaffiliated (The Nones)” We also always welcome your suggestions sent to FaithandWorkspodcast@gmail.com. We will also be experimenting with new production formats to make our content even more accessible and engaging. We are committed to sparking meaningful conversations for our listeners that will inspire action and thoughtful conversation.

You can help support the Faith and Works podcast by tuning in to our upcoming episodes, and sharing our content with your network. Together, we can amplify these important discussions to a wider audience. We are excited for you to listen and be inspired in 2025!
