Celebrating Bob Bruttell: Honored at the 2026 Islamic Society of North America’s National Convention

Congratulations to IFLC Board Member Bob Bruttell on being recognized at the Islamic Society of North America’s National Convention.

We are honored to celebrate Bob’s recognition for his dedication to advancing interfaith understanding and meaningful community engagement.

During his remarks, Bob expressed gratitude to the mentors who have influenced his journey—Victor Begg, Greg Geiger, Steve Spreitzer, and Najah Bazzy—before sharing a message that reflects the heart of the InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit’s mission.

“Interfaith” and “understanding” are action verbs.

Bob challenged us to see understanding not as a passive ideal, but as an intentional practice. It requires us to step beyond our own congregations, engage with those whose experiences differ from our own, ask thoughtful questions, and have the courage to seek understanding rather than assume disagreement.

His closing reflection is one we hope more people will embrace: “Most of the time we will not find the disagreement we expected; in fact, we will build friendships.”

At IFLC, we believe this is how stronger communities are built—through courageous conversations, authentic relationships, and a shared commitment to learning from one another.

Congratulations, Bob, on this well-deserved recognition. Thank you for your leadership and for continuing to inspire all of us.
