The Power of Cultural Understanding in the Journeys Program

April 15, 2025

In a world where understanding across diversity and difference is more vital than ever, the Journeys: World Religions in Metropolitan Detroit program stands out as an important educational experience that encourages curiosity, empathy, and critical thinking. At its core, the program is about much more than learning facts about world religions—it’s about understanding people, their histories, and the beliefs and cultures that shape our shared world.

Faith Journeys form the foundation of the program, offering students opportunities to visit local houses of worship, hear from community members, and witness firsthand how faith is practiced in everyday life. These immersive experiences bring to life the rituals, sacred texts, and values that encapsulate various religious traditions across Metro Detroit. More importantly, they reveal the personal stories behind the traditions—stories that help students move beyond stereotypes and into deeper understanding.

But the program doesn’t stop there.

Cultural Journeys, designed as culminating experiences in the Journeys program, take this exploration a step further. These Journeys intentionally weave together the themes of faith, history, and culture and invite students to reflect and think more critically. Cultural Journeys ask: How has history affected individuals, faith communities, and cultures? How have people expressed their beliefs and identities over time? What choices have shaped the course of history—and how might students’ choices today influence the future?

Through storytelling, guided tours, presentations, and open dialogue, Cultural Journeys provide a powerful intersection of faith and culture. They give students a chance to make connections between what they’ve seen in places of worship and the wider historical and cultural forces that shape those communities. These experiences are meant to be both educational as well as transformative.

By encouraging students to ask thoughtful questions and consider multiple perspectives, the Journeys program helps them understand that religion is not practiced in a vacuum. It is lived out in communities influenced by migration, politics, economic change, and social movements. It evolves through time and is expressed in language, art, food, and family traditions. Cultural Journeys show students that they, too, are part of this rich tapestry—that their questions, insights, and actions matter.

In the end, the goal is to make certain that the next generation has with the tools to navigate a diverse world with respect, curiosity, and compassion. The InterFaith Leadership Council and the Journeys program would like to thank the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Henry Ford, the Arab American National Museum, Zekelman Holocaust Center, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the Chaldean Cultural Center for your support and continued partnership. We value your steadfast commitment to excellence when welcoming and educating our Journeys students!
