Jain Culture in the Heart of Detroit

July 14, 2024

On Sunday, June 9th, Bridging to Belonging alumni and members of our metro area communities had the opportunity to tour the Jain Society of Greater Detroit in Farmington Hills.

The tour began with a warm and gracious welcome from the hosts, who shared the history and significance of the Jain temple as well as the faith traditions to which followers of the practice adhere. Participants were introduced to the core principles of Jainism, including non-violence (ahimsa), non-possessiveness (aparigraha), and the pursuit of truth (satya).

The hosts also guided participants through their beautifully adorned temple, highlighting the architecture and symbolic art that represents various aspects of Jain beliefs. Participants had the chance to observe a traditional prayer ceremony and learn about the rituals and customs that play a significant role in Jain worship and daily life. Included during the tour was ample time for questions, and participants used these occasions to discuss many insightful and thought-provoking topics with the hosts to gain a clearer understanding of Jainism and Jain practices.

The visit concluded with a community meal, emphasizing Jain dietary practices that promote non-violence and respect for all living beings.

The immersive tour of the Jain Society of Greater Detroit was a truly phenomenal experience, highlighting the Bridging to Belonging principles of seeking to value all individuals in their complexity through storytelling, intentional listening, and including the voices of all to co-create a better future. The InterFaith Leadership Council extends our heartfelt gratitude to the Jain Society for their warm hospitality and for sharing their rich religious and cultural traditions with us.
