DPTV’s Pre-School-U is a community outreach project designed to train parents and caregivers to prepare pre-school age children in high-need areas for Kindergarten. Through the use of teaching kits and video-based vignettes, Pre-School-U will offer parents and caregivers simple ways to promote early learning and literacy in children under the age of five.
The IFLC along with the Religious Leaders forum believe that the comfortable and welcoming atmosphere of faith communities is the ideal setting to attract caregivers in need of learning how to address literacy skills within their homes.
Video vignettes are enhanced with support materials that will serve as the core of an early learning-focused partnership with the InterFaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit (IFLC). The IFLC will link DPTV to places of worship and faith-based organizations within ten high-need areas in Metro Detroit, including Northend/Central Detroit, Northwest Detroit, Southwest Detroit, Northeast Detroit, South Macomb, Pontiac, South Oakland County, River Rouge, Inkster, and Hamtramck. Leaders and volunteers will be trained to implement “Pre-School-U” with at least 500 parents and care providers within their faith communities.
The project will be evaluated for its effectiveness within the target populations, for the way it is received by participants, and for the impact that it has on raising the levels of kindergarten readiness in under-served communities in Southeast Michigan.
