Dawoodi Bohra Al-Masjid Al-Burhani

July 14, 2024

On May 8th, students from the Religious Diversity Journeys program visited the Al-Masjid Al-Burhani in Farmington Hills, home to the Dawoodi Bohra community of Detroit.

The students were warmly greeted by members of the Dawoodi Bohra community eager to share their faith and traditions. The day began with a Welcome and Overview which included particulars of the Dawoodi Bohra faith and the history of the community in the metro Detroit area.

Students were then split into smaller groups to engage with hosts in sessions that included, “Masjids: Design, Prayer and Unique Features,” “Holidays, Culture and Traditions,” and “A Day in the Life of a Dawoodi Bohra Kid.” During each session, hosts captivated and delighted the students by providing interesting facts about their faith and traditions, traditional food samples, the opportunity to participate in several hands-on activities that highlighted various aspects of daily faith life, as well as a variety of religious objects to see, touch and examine.

The visit also included a delicious meal served in the tradition of the Dawoodi Bohra faith and culture. Students were seated together on the floor around a steel thaal, a low, round table designed to accommodate a family or any group of 8 or 9 people during a communal dinner. The meal included elements and explanations designed to educate the students about the importance of certain traditions during every meal.

Before the day ended, students were introduced to Metro Food Rescue, a non-profit that rescues food that would otherwise be discarded and delivers it to a network of area food pantries. Students assisted with the assembly of over 150 Split Pea and Lentil with Rice soup kits to be distributed locally to families in need, designed to feed over 600 people.

The students will certainly carry the memories of this extraordinary Journey back into their school and communities to inspire and enrich the lives of others. We are so grateful to the wonderful people of the Dawoodi Bohra community for welcoming us so warmly and we look forward to returning again soon!
